The American lime comes from eastern North America. It has very large leaves and is therefore a good shade tree. The flower is rich, fragrant and very popular with bees (bee pasture).
Tree profile
The leaves of American linden are heart-shaped, large, up to 20 cm (7.8 in) long and wide. The petiole is about 5 cm (2 in) long. The leaves are green on both sides. The leaf margins are coarsely toothed.
The flowers are yellow and form cymes with up to 12 flowers. The flowers smell strongly.
Stone fruits are about 6 mm (0.25 in) in diameter and spherical. The fruit is ripe in September / October.
The branches are gray-green and smooth. The buds are thick, red, ovate pointed, with two visible bud scales.
