From the eucalyptus trees there are over 600 species. Native of the trees belonging to the myrtle family (Myrtaceae), in Australia and Indonesia. Some eucalyptus trees are cultivated but also on the American Pacific coast, in southern Europe and Africa.

The trees grow quickly and are as a rule evergreen. Some species are hardy and tolerate temperatures below 20 degrees Celsius and grow to over 800 meters yet. Other species are able after forest fires again drive out, they have fire-resistant roots. The shape of the leaves can vary greatly depending on the age of the tree.

In English, we say to eucalyptus gum or box also, in German also Blaugummibaum.

Use to find the eucalyptus trees, which are also called eucalypts, as timber, for shipbuilding, the construction of musical instruments, flooring, lumber, fence posts and for some kinds are very useful as firewood. Likewise, skin-friendly oils are derived from the eucalyptus. As food for the Koala Bear or constituent of cough drops the eucalyptus is known to everyone.
